Moulin Rouge – Paris, France
The Moulin Rouge is probably the world’s most famous burlesque nightclub. Immortalised in the Baz Lurhman film “Moulin Rouge” starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, it still runs today over a 100 years after it first opened.
Moulin Rouge which is French for Red Windmill was built in 1889 in the red light district of Pigalle. It is best known as the spiritual birthplace and home of the can-can. The can-can with its high kicking and trademark frilly under-skirts was originally introduced as a seductive dance by the courtesans who operated in the club, eventually evolving into a world wide form of burlesque cabaret.
